Grayscale's AI Crypto Sector Surges 54% in September, Outperforming Broader Market
Grayscale's Artificial Intelligence crypto sector achieved a remarkable 54% return in September, significantly outpacing the broader cryptocurrency market, which saw a 24% gain during the same period. This performance was highlighted in a research note published on October 2 by Zach Pandl, Grayscale's head of research. The firm categorizes the crypto market into six sectors, with the AI sector emerging as the leader for the month.
The surge in the AI sector was primarily driven by increasing investor recognition of blockchain technology as a foundational element for the emerging agent economy. Key use cases identified include payments, identity verification, private computation, and verifiable records. Notably, the NEAR token led the sector with an impressive 183% increase, followed by VVV with a 70% gain and WLD at 47%.
Despite its strong performance, the AI sector remains the smallest in Grayscale's framework, with a market capitalization of approximately $15 billion. Grayscale has been strategically pivoting towards AI infrastructure, launching its Decentralized AI Fund in 2024, which includes tokens like NEAR, TAO, RENDER, and FIL. Additionally, on September 22, the firm rebranded its Bitcoin Miners ETF to the Grayscale AI Compute ETF, shifting its focus to high-performance computing equities and futures.
