Korea Blockchain Week 2026 Explores AI Integration with Blockchain Technology

Korea Blockchain Week 2026, held from September 29 to October 1 in Seoul, South Korea, focused on the evolving relationship between blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The event, hosted by FactBlock and presented by Upbit, featured discussions on the limitations of traditional transaction-oriented blockchains in supporting an economy increasingly driven by autonomous AI agents. Michael Heinrich, CEO of 0G Labs, emphasized that while legacy blockchain designs excel in handling payments, they lack the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the complex needs of AI agents.

Heinrich's keynote, titled "The Trillion-Dollar Agentic Economy," highlighted the requirements for a successful integration of AI and blockchain. He argued that AI agents require machine-native identity verification, verifiable computing capabilities, and high-volume data handling, which current Layer 1 blockchains do not inherently provide. Proposed solutions discussed at the conference included the development of Agentic ID standards, Trusted Execution Environments for secure computing, and high-throughput decentralized storage systems.

The presence of banks and policymakers at this year's event marked a shift from the traditionally crypto-focused audience. Their participation underscored the practical challenges AI agents face when interacting with conventional financial systems, positioning blockchain and stablecoin infrastructure as viable alternatives for settlement. Discussions also included Korea's initiatives in tokenized securities, the Bank of Korea's central bank digital currency pilot known as Project Hangang, and the development of won-denominated stablecoins, with a regulatory framework for tokenized securities set to take effect in February 2027.

As the event concluded, the emphasis on the need for AI-specific blockchain infrastructure raised questions about the future of general-purpose blockchains. The ongoing debate will likely influence the adoption of new standards and protocols, such as the x402 payment standard, which has already processed over 200 million transactions by mid-2026. Observers will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold, particularly in relation to the upcoming tokenized securities framework and the regulatory landscape for stablecoins in South Korea.
