SMBC Nikko and Uniswap Collaborate on Japan-Compliant DeFi Gateway

On October 2, 2026, SMBC Nikko Securities, a major Japanese securities firm, announced a partnership with Uniswap Labs, Nethermind, Base, and Nyx Foundation to develop a decentralized finance (DeFi) gateway compliant with Japanese regulations. The project aims to create a liquidity-provisioning protocol with custom liquidity pools designed to meet regulatory compliance requirements, with a target completion date set for mid-2027.

The initiative will incorporate anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) measures directly into the liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 hooks. This approach is intended to ensure that investor protections are integrated within the system, allowing eligible Japanese investors to access decentralized financial products in a regulatory-friendly environment.

SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory engagement and provide compliance expertise, while Nethermind will focus on technical aspects, including AI development and smart-contract security. Uniswap Labs will contribute its protocol and v4 hook architecture, and Base, managed by Coinbase Technologies, will support the blockchain infrastructure. Regular updates will be provided to Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) as the project progresses.
