Avalanche Launches Helicon Upgrade for Faster Block Verification
Avalanche has successfully implemented the Helicon upgrade on its Mainnet, which went live on September 22, 2026. This significant upgrade enhances block verification speeds by up to 100 times and integrates six community proposals aimed at improving transaction processing and validator rewards. The upgrade was delivered through AvalancheGo v1.15.0 and marks a major step in the network's evolution.
A key feature of the Helicon upgrade is Continuous Execution, which separates the consensus and execution processes on the C-Chain. This decoupling allows for asynchronous transaction processing, effectively doubling the per-block capacity and improving throughput during peak network activity. Initial data indicates that the network has been operating below its gas target for the first time in months, suggesting improved efficiency.
In addition to performance enhancements, Helicon revises the staking rules for validators. The minimum staking duration has been reduced from 14 days to just 2 days, allowing for greater flexibility and lower barriers for new validators. However, a new requirement mandates that validators maintain at least 90% uptime to qualify for rewards, raising the performance expectations for network operators. The upgrade also introduces a dynamic gas pricing model governed by validators, significantly altering the cost structure for transactions on the network.
