Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Achieves 54 Milliseconds Median Finalization on Testnet
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade has successfully launched on its public testnet, achieving a median block finalization time of 54 milliseconds. This performance significantly surpasses the team's initial design target of 100-150 milliseconds and marks a substantial improvement over the current mainnet finalization time of approximately 12.8 seconds.
The upgrade, which went live on September 24, 2026, introduces a new consensus mechanism called Votor, replacing the previous TowerBFT system. Votor enhances efficiency by moving voting off-chain, allowing validators to exchange votes directly over a peer-to-peer network. This change is expected to reduce the block space consumed by vote transactions, which previously accounted for 50-75% of it.
In addition to Votor, the Alpenglow upgrade features dual finalization paths and a new fault-tolerance model designed to improve network resilience. The proposal for this upgrade, known as SIMD-0326, received overwhelming support from validators, passing with 98.27% approval during a vote in September 2025.
The next step for Solana is the deployment of the upgrade on its mainnet, which is linked to the upcoming Agave 4.3 release, anticipated in late September or October 2026. The timeline for this deployment will depend on the performance observed during the testnet and devnet phases, particularly whether mainnet finalization can approach the impressive results seen on the testnet.
