Bitcoin Closed September up 6.5%, Ethereum — Nearly 9%
- Bitcoin ended September up about 6.5%, while Ethereum gained nearly 9%.
- Mid-month, the leading cryptocurrency dipped below $75,000.
- Later, bitcoin climbed above $85,000, and Ethereum topped $2,700, setting new highs since January 2026.
September was positive for both bitcoin and Ethereum. The leading cryptocurrency added about 6.5% over the month, while Ethereum rose nearly 9%, according to CoinGlass data.
Historically, September is considered one of the weakest months for bitcoin. From 2013 to 2025, the asset closed the period in the red eight times. In 2026, the leading cryptocurrency extended its streak of positive Septembers, which began in 2023.

As of writing, bitcoin is trading around $84,170. During September, the asset dipped below $75,000, and in the second half of the month it climbed above $85,000.

Ethereum also ended September in the green. The most notable move came in the second half of the month, when the asset broke above $2,700 and reached its highest levels since January 2026.

As of writing, Ethereum is trading around $2,717.

What Happened in the Market in September
In the first half of the month, bitcoin mostly traded around $76,000-$80,000. At the same time, spot Bitcoin ETFs in the US faced capital outflows.
Between September 8 and 11, investors withdrew $462.73 million from these products, snapping a three-week streak of inflows. Ethereum ETFs, by contrast, attracted $197.11 million over the same period.
In mid-month, pressure on the market intensified. After the US Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, bitcoin briefly dipped to around $74,960. Forty-nine senators voted to move the initiative forward procedurally, while 50 voted against, whereas 60 votes were required to clear the step.
On September 16, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 bps — to 3.75%-4%. This marked the first hike since July 2023. After the decision was released, bitcoin did not show a sharp move and continued trading around $76,000.
In the second half of September, the market shifted into growth. On September 21, bitcoin climbed above $85,000, and Ethereum broke above $2,700. For both assets, these were the highest levels since January 2026. Against the backdrop of the move, liquidations in the futures market reached $746 million, with more than $647 million coming from short positions.
At the same time, inflows into crypto ETFs strengthened. From September 21 to 25, these products attracted a total of $3.4 billion. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $2.39 billion — the best weekly result in 2026 and the largest inflow since October 2025. Ethereum ETFs added another $689.88 million.
After reaching local highs, the market partially corrected. By the end of September, bitcoin returned to the $83,000–$84,000 range, but retained most of its monthly gains. Ethereum ended the period around the $2,700 mark.
As a result, both of the largest crypto assets closed September in positive territory, despite a mid-month pullback and a Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
