Bitcoins Sat in Wallets for Over a Decade

The largest transfer was the movement of 1,260.78 BTC on September 6 from an address that had not been used for more than 10 years. At the time of the transaction, the coins were valued at about $100.63 million, and their average cost basis was around $652 per 1 BTC. Galaxy Research estimated the owner’s realized profit at about $99.64 million.

On September 4, another “dormant” address that had not been used for more than 15 years moved 6.78 BTC worth about $551,000. The coins were received back in February 2011, and their initial average cost basis was around $4. Galaxy Research estimated the profit from the transaction at $523,000.

That same day, another address that had not made any transactions for almost 15 years moved 40 BTC. At the time of the transaction, they were worth about $3.09 million, and the realized profit was about $3.1 million.

On September 2, an address holding 146.06 BTC that had been stored for about 12.8 years became active again. Their market value at the time of the transfer was approximately $11.31 million, and the realized profit was $11.22 million.

Thousands of Bitcoins “Woke Up” in September

On September 19, the owner of an address that had been inactive for almost 15 years moved 100 BTC worth about $8.09 million. The coins’ average cost basis was around $3 per BTC, so Galaxy Research estimated the profit at $8.09 million.

On September 22, an even larger operation took place: an address that had held coins for more than 14 years moved 600 BTC worth about $51.9 million. According to Galaxy Research, their initial cost basis was around $8 per bitcoin, and the realized profit reached $48.71 million.
