Bitcoin Experiences 43% Surge in Q3 Amid Rising Treasury Yields

Bitcoin achieved a remarkable 43.88% increase in the third quarter of 2026, marking its best quarterly performance since 2017. The cryptocurrency opened the quarter at approximately $58,500 and closed between $84,000 and $86,000, breaking a three-quarter losing streak. This surge was largely driven by a significant turnaround in U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows, which shifted from outflows of around $5 billion at the end of July to a net inflow of about $1 billion by late September, including a record single-week intake of $2.39 billion.

Despite the impressive gains, Bitcoin faces challenges as U.S. Treasury yields have reached their highest levels since 2007. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on September 16, 2026, marking its first increase since early 2023. The 10-year Treasury yield peaked at approximately 5.22%, while the 30-year yield climbed to about 5.51%. These rising yields create an opportunity cost for investors, making it harder to justify holding an asset like Bitcoin that generates no income.

The current market dynamics differ from those in 2017, as the presence of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs now channels institutional investments into the cryptocurrency. This exposure means Bitcoin is more susceptible to macroeconomic factors that influence traditional portfolios. Investors are closely monitoring ETF flows and corporate purchases, which have been crucial in maintaining Bitcoin's price in the $83,000 to $87,000 range towards the end of the quarter. As the market heads into the fourth quarter, the implications of high Treasury yields on Bitcoin's performance remain a key area of focus.
