BlackRock CEO Warns of Bitcoin's Volatility Due to Leverage

Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, emphasized the volatility of Bitcoin during his remarks at the New York Times DealBook Summit on December 3, 2025. He characterized Bitcoin as an 'asset of fear,' highlighting the significant impact that leveraged trading has on its price fluctuations. Fink's comments come as Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline, dropping from over $125,000 in early October 2025 to below $90,000 shortly thereafter, a movement attributed to the unwinding of leveraged positions.

Fink explained that leverage allows traders to borrow funds to increase their investment stakes, which can lead to forced sales when prices fall. This cascading effect can exacerbate price declines, creating a cycle of further selling. Since the launch of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in January 2024, the fund has seen substantial inflows exceeding $65 billion, but it has also faced multiple drawdowns of up to 25%.

Despite the volatility, Fink noted that not all investors are reacting with fear. Sovereign wealth funds have been accumulating positions in IBIT, indicating a long-term investment perspective rather than short-term speculation. This behavior suggests that some institutional investors view Bitcoin as a strategic asset amidst concerns over government finances and currency stability, particularly as the U.S. national debt has surged to $40 trillion.

Fink's insights serve as a cautionary note for investors, reminding them that while Bitcoin may offer a hedge against economic uncertainty, its price can be dramatically influenced by market sentiment and leverage. The dynamics of fear-driven trading can lead to significant swings, underscoring the importance of understanding the risks associated with Bitcoin investments.
