Cardano Implements Blockchain Solution to Combat Wine Counterfeiting in Georgia

The Cardano Foundation has introduced a blockchain-based verification system aimed at combating counterfeit wine in Georgia. As of mid-2026, over 30 wineries in the country have adopted this technology, allowing consumers to verify the authenticity of more than 100,000 bottles by scanning a QR code on the label. This initiative is particularly significant as counterfeit wine is a major issue, costing European producers an estimated €2.8 billion annually.

The verification process functions similarly to a passport for each bottle, assigning a digital fingerprint and metadata that details its origin, all stored on the Cardano blockchain. When a buyer scans the QR code, the system quickly checks the bottle's details against the recorded information, utilizing cryptographic signatures to ensure the data's integrity and authenticity. This system complements traditional paper certificates, providing dual verification methods for producers and consumers alike.

Launched in 2022, the Georgian Wine Traceability Program was developed in collaboration with the National Wine Agency of Georgia and other local partners. In August 2026, the Cardano Foundation released an open-source reference implementation named OriginateNavio, designed to facilitate wine provenance tracking. This initiative was showcased in October 2026, highlighting its potential impact on the wine and spirits market, and aims to encourage wider adoption of blockchain technology in the industry.
