Tether Experiences $1 Billion Drop in USDT Amid Bitcoin Recovery Challenges
Tether's USDT stablecoin has seen a significant decline, losing nearly $1 billion in market capitalization over a five-day period in mid-October 2026. This contraction raises concerns about Bitcoin's ability to maintain its upward momentum without new liquidity entering the market. On-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant reported this decline as Bitcoin attempts to regain strength.
Data from Crystal Intelligence reveals that USDT balances across 19 major exchanges and lending platforms dropped by $4.6 billion from early July to October 1, 2026. During the same timeframe, these platforms absorbed approximately $1.9 billion in competing stablecoins, primarily USDC and RLUSD, indicating a shift in trader preferences rather than a complete exit from the market. Bybit, a prominent exchange, experienced the largest net outflow of USDT, shedding $1.66 billion while adding $315 million in RLUSD.
The relationship between stablecoin supply and Bitcoin prices is critical, as previous Bitcoin rallies in 2024 and 2025 coincided with significant expansions in USDT's market cap. The recent $1.9 billion influx into USDC and RLUSD, while notable, does not fully compensate for the decline in USDT, leaving overall liquidity conditions for Bitcoin trading pairs in question. Traders are advised to monitor net USDT issuance and the inflows of competing stablecoins to gauge future market stability.
