Chilean Cryptocurrency Exchange Orionx Suspends Operations Amid Funding Gap Investigation

Orionx, a cryptocurrency exchange based in Chile, has announced the suspension of its operations and user withdrawals following a forensic audit that uncovered a funding gap exceeding 7 million USD. The audit revealed that significant custodial assets were transferred to external wallets, which are not under the company's control.

The exchange has implicated two of its founding partners, Joaquín Díaz and Roberto Zibert, along with other former employees, in the unauthorized transactions that took place between 2018 and 2021. Orionx has reported these findings to the Chilean National Prosecutor's Office, seeking further investigation into the matter.

In addition to the internal investigation, the Chilean Financial Market Commission (CMF) has stated that Orionx was not authorized to provide cryptocurrency financial services and failed to comply with the regulations set forth in the Fintech Law. The exchange has expressed uncertainty regarding the recovery of users' funds, indicating that it cannot guarantee full restitution.
