Coinbase Reports Surge in Tokenized Stock Holders on Base
Coinbase has announced that its tokenized stock initiative on the Base network has attracted approximately 46,700 asset holders, marking a remarkable 97-fold increase in just 30 days since its launch in late August. This surge indicates a strong demand for on-chain equities trading, with the total estimated value of tokenized equities reaching $26.5 million.
The program began on August 24 with the introduction of tokenized versions of four major U.S. stocks: Nvidia, Apple, Meta, and Alphabet. Within just eleven days, the selection expanded to ten stocks, adding notable names such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Tesla. Each token represents a direct 1:1 claim on the underlying shares held by a regulated custodian, allowing for fractional ownership.
These tokenized stocks are currently available only to eligible non-U.S. users. When a tokenized stock is purchased, institutional market makers acquire the corresponding real shares on traditional markets, which are then held by Alpaca, a regulated custodian operating under the Abu Dhabi Global Market framework. This structure aims to protect the underlying shares in the event of bankruptcy of any party involved in the transaction chain.
The tokens trade continuously on decentralized exchanges, with Aerodrome serving as a primary venue. This 24/7 trading capability distinguishes them from traditional stock markets, which have set trading hours. Coinbase has also established a verification portal to help investors confirm the authenticity of the tokens they are purchasing, further enhancing security in this emerging market segment.
