Vitalik Buterin Releases Science Fiction Novel 'Snowmoon' Under Open Source License

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has announced the completion of his original science fiction novel titled 'Snowmoon,' which consists of 32 chapters. The narrative is set in a speculative world that emphasizes cryptography and decentralized governance, exploring ideological conflicts between fictional societies such as Veridia and the Arctic Empire. The story incorporates advanced concepts like zero-knowledge proofs, second voting, and privacy technologies, reflecting Buterin's longstanding interests in mechanism design and digital sovereignty.

The novel has been released under the GPL v3 open source license, allowing for adaptations into films, animations, and other derivative works. However, Buterin has stipulated that any related production materials, including AI prompts and scripts, must also be open-sourced. He clarified that while he utilized AI for minor tasks such as spelling and grammar checks, the text of 'Snowmoon' was entirely authored by him, emphasizing that the work was created with care and passion.
