Wormhole Achieves Over $70 Billion in Cross-Chain Volume Amid Institutional Adoption
Wormhole, an interoperability protocol, has reported processing over $70 billion in cumulative cross-chain volume, marking a significant milestone in the realm of decentralized finance (DeFi). The protocol has facilitated more than one billion messages across 40 different blockchains, showcasing its extensive reach beyond its initial focus on bridging Solana and Ethereum. In 2025 alone, Wormhole processed $17.6 billion, with a notable contribution of over $16 billion from the Mayan protocol through cross-chain swaps.
The protocol's Native Token Transfers (NTT) standard has enabled the launch of more than 100 tokens, collectively valued at over $170 billion, allowing for a unified representation of tokens across multiple chains. This capability is particularly appealing to major financial institutions such as BlackRock, Apollo Global, and VanEck, which utilize Wormhole for managing tokenized assets and stablecoin initiatives. The NTT standard addresses liquidity fragmentation, ensuring that token supply and permissions remain intact regardless of the blockchain used.
Wormhole's reliability is underscored by its lack of major security incidents, a notable achievement in a sector often plagued by exploits. The Guardian network, comprising 19 validators, ensures transaction security through a quorum system, making it an attractive option for risk-averse institutional clients. The protocol is also expanding its ecosystem, with recent integrations announced with newer blockchain networks Monad and Fogo, and plans to support Cardano in the future.
