The Bitfinex Playbook: Two Ways to Earn Without Trading
While Bitcoin’s recent breakout may have unleashed a wave of bullish sentiment, it’s worth remembering: even in a rising market, not every asset in your account needs to be actively in a trade.
Whether you’re holding fiat, stablecoins or crypto on Bitfinex, there are ways to put those assets to work — without opening another position or trying to time the market.
In this first edition of The Bitfinex Playbook: Trending Markets — a new series exploring how traders can make use of different Bitfinex products when markets are on the move — we start with two ways to do exactly that:
Margin Lending, where you can make your assets available to traders looking to borrow and earn interest when your funds are matched.
And Staking, where eligible crypto holdings can earn rewards from the underlying network.
Margin Lending: Let Other Traders Pay You, the Lender
Every leveraged trade needs capital behind it. And nothing gets traders reaching for leverage quite like a trending market.
On Bitfinex, that capital can come directly from other users via the peer-to-peer (P2P) funding market. If you have funds you’re not currently using, you can make them available to traders who want to borrow them for margin positions.
Because it’s a P2P market, funding rates are driven by supply and demand. When more traders want to borrow, demand for available funds rises and so can the rates they’re willing to pay. That makes Margin Lending particularly relevant in a trending market, when trading activity and demand for leverage pick up.
From the moment your funding offer is matched, the borrower pays interest for as long as they use those funds, with funding earnings credited to your account daily.
You choose:
- The asset you want to make available
- The rate at which you’re prepared to lend
- And the duration of the funding offer — from 2 to 120 days
At the end of the funding period, you can either make the capital available again manually or use Auto-Renew to automatically create a new offer.
Bitfinex currently supports Margin Funding across more than 30 assets, including US dollars (USD), euros (EUR), pounds (GBP), Tether (USDt), Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL).
Most recently on Bitfinex, USD was paying somewhere around 8% to 11% annualised, USDt a little less, and ETH closer to 2%.
In other words, your money earns the most when everyone wants it.
As one of the longest-standing exchanges in the industry, and the operator of one of the first P2P funding markets ever built, Bitfinex has maintained that market across thirteen years of market cycles, with 100% of lenders’ capital protected throughout.
In a market this busy, lending is the simplest way to take a cut of everyone else’s trade.

Staking: Let the Network Pay You For Holding Your Assets
For eligible proof-of-stake assets, simply maintaining exposure to the asset can also create an opportunity to earn protocol rewards.
Bitfinex currently supports staking across selected proof-of-stake assets including Polkadot (DOT) at up to 6% and Tron (TRX) at up to 4%, as well as Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA) and Ethereum (ETH) at up to 3%.
For DOT, TRX, SOL and ADA, Bitfinex uses a soft-staking model. That means there’s no need to run your own validator node or meet a network minimum, and supported assets are not locked simply because they are earning staking rewards.
That flexibility matters.
Eligible soft-staked assets can remain available for other uses on Bitfinex, including trading and, where supported, Margin Lending.
So if you already hold one of these assets, staking gives those holdings another job: earning protocol rewards while you retain exposure to the underlying token.
Ethereum works differently. ETH committed to staking is converted to ETH2, and returning it to unstaked ETH is subject to Ethereum’s own unstaking process and queue.
Either way, Bitfinex handles the technical staking process, with eligible rewards distributed to users weekly.
Not everything in your portfolio is meant to be traded. Some of it you hold because you believe in it over years, not weeks. Staking is what that conviction earns you in the meantime. Rewards land every week on assets you were always going to hold, so the position grows instead of sitting at the size you bought it.

Margin Lending or Staking?
The answer depends largely on what you already hold and what you want that capital to do.
Holding fiat or stablecoins?
Margin Lending may be the more natural route to explore. Instead of leaving funds unused, you can make them available to traders seeking funding.
Holding an eligible proof-of-stake asset?
Staking can allow that asset to generate protocol rewards while you continue to maintain exposure to it.
Holding DOT, TRX, SOL or ADA?
You may not necessarily have to choose between the two.
Because Bitfinex soft staking does not lock these assets, eligible holdings may continue earning staking rewards while also being made available through Margin Funding where supported.
That creates the possibility of two separate earning mechanisms from the same holdings: staking rewards from the network and funding interest from borrower demand.
Holding ETH?
Both staking and Margin Funding are available, but staked ETH is converted to ETH2 and therefore cannot simultaneously be offered on the ETH funding market. In that case, you choose which use of the asset better fits your strategy.
Make More of the Assets You Already Hold
Trading is only one way to use capital on Bitfinex.
Margin Lending allows you to earn interest by supplying capital to traders seeking leverage. Staking allows eligible holdings to generate protocol rewards without requiring you to run the infrastructure yourself.
Neither requires you to predict where the next candle goes.
If part of your portfolio is currently sitting unused, it may be worth asking a different question:
Could those assets be working harder?
Next in the Bitfinex Playbook
What changes when you do have a view on where the market is heading?
In Episode 2, we move from earning to trading, looking at how Bitfinex Margin Trading and perpetual contacts — with up to 10x and 100x leverage respectively and zero trading fees — can be used to express directional views, manage capital more efficiently and access leveraged market exposure.
