Crypto Protocols Invest $640 Million in Token Buybacks Amid Market Shift

Digital asset protocols have invested approximately $640 million in token buybacks as of late August, a significant increase compared to just $366,000 recorded in all of 2024, according to blockchain analytics firm Allium Labs. This surge in buybacks reflects a strategic shift as investors increasingly pivot towards artificial intelligence stocks.

The majority of the buyback activity, nearly 90%, is attributed to two protocols: Hyperliquid and pump.fun. Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetuals exchange, has directed 99% of its trading-fee revenue into repurchasing and permanently canceling its HYPE tokens. Since its launch in December 2024, Hyperliquid has executed a total of $1.3 billion in buybacks, resulting in a 70% increase in the value of HYPE tokens despite a downturn in the broader crypto market.

In contrast, Sky Protocol has adopted a more conservative approach, completing $26 million in buybacks for its SKY tokens. The current market conditions have seen Bitcoin drop around 38% from its peak, while XRP and Solana have experienced declines of approximately 60%. This environment has prompted protocols to utilize buybacks as a method to stabilize their token values and reduce circulating supply.
