Dormant Bitcoin Wallet Activates After 15 Years, Transferring $3 Million

A Bitcoin wallet that had been inactive since November 2011 has recently moved 40 BTC, now valued at approximately $3.09 million. The wallet, which was dormant for nearly 15 years, executed the transaction on September 3, 2026, marking a significant gain of over 2.5 million percent from its original purchase price of about $120 when Bitcoin was trading at roughly $3 per coin.

The wallet is linked to a class-action lawsuit in New York targeting 39,069 dormant Bitcoin addresses, which aims to reclaim an estimated 3.7 to 3.8 million BTC. This legal action argues that Bitcoin in wallets that have not been active for over a decade should be considered abandoned and subject to claims. However, the recent transaction complicates this argument, as it demonstrates that the original owner still controls the funds.

This activation is part of a broader trend, with several wallets from the same era beginning to show activity after years of silence. For instance, another wallet transferred nearly 50 BTC worth about $3.2 million earlier in August 2026. Each of these transactions reduces the number of addresses that can be classified as abandoned, potentially weakening the plaintiffs' case in the ongoing litigation.

The implications of these dormant wallets being reactivated extend beyond individual owners. If a court were to rule that the dormant Bitcoin could be reclaimed, it could lead to a significant influx of Bitcoin into the market, representing nearly 20% of the current circulating supply. Regulatory bodies are closely monitoring these developments, as they may influence future laws regarding unclaimed digital assets.
