Gas Acquisition Spending Reaches Decade High Amid Supply Scramble

Energy companies have significantly increased their spending on natural gas acquisitions, totaling $32 billion in the first half of 2026. This surge marks the highest level of dealmaking in the upstream gas sector in over ten years, driven by a competitive market for quality gas assets. The average premium paid in these gas-focused upstream deals reached 21% above pre-deal valuations, the steepest increase since 2013, reflecting the urgency among buyers to secure supply.

Shell's acquisition of ARC Resources for $16.4 billion stands out as the largest transaction in this wave of activity. This deal, which involves a Canadian producer in the Montney shale formation, is Shell's most significant since its purchase of BG Group nearly a decade ago. Additionally, ONEOK's agreement to acquire Brazos Midstream's Permian assets for approximately $4.43 billion, supported by a $9 billion equity stake from Apollo Global Management, highlights the trend of substantial investments in the sector.

The focus on North America is particularly evident, with $30 billion invested in unconventional gas resources during the first half of 2026, three times the recent three-year average. This heightened investment is largely attributed to increasing energy security concerns in Europe and parts of Asia, prompting countries to diversify their gas supply sources and turn to liquefied natural gas (LNG). As a result, upstream gas assets have become strategically essential, with companies considering long-term supply commitments when bidding for these properties.
