Jump Crypto Discontinues Frankendancer Ahead of Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade
Jump Crypto's Firedancer team has announced the discontinuation of Frankendancer, a hybrid validator client for the Solana blockchain, which has been operational on the mainnet since September 2024. This decision comes as Solana prepares for its upcoming Alpenglow upgrade, set to activate in October 2026, marking a significant shift in the network's consensus mechanism.
Frankendancer was developed as a transitional solution, combining components from Firedancer and Agave, another major Solana client. However, with the full Firedancer client already live since December 2025, the hybrid version is no longer deemed necessary. As of mid-to-late 2026, Firedancer clients collectively account for between 14% and 26% of the total Solana stake, with the full version representing approximately 11% to 14%.
The Alpenglow upgrade introduces a new consensus protocol called Votor, which significantly reduces transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. This overhaul renders the existing hybrid client impractical, as it relies on Agave's outdated consensus code. Validators currently using Frankendancer will need to transition to the full Firedancer client or revert to Agave before the October deadline to ensure continued participation in the network.
