Ledger Confirms $93 Million Hack Linked to Physical Device Implant

Ledger, a prominent cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider, has confirmed that a significant security breach has resulted in the theft of up to $93 million from over 300 wallets. The company stated that the hack did not involve any software manipulation, but rather a physical implant found in devices sold through the reseller CryptoBilis.

The implant was capable of reading recovery phrases displayed on the device during setup and transmitting them via a mobile network. This revelation raises critical questions about trust in the security of hardware wallets, particularly regarding the reliability of vendors, resellers, and the integrity of the devices themselves.

Pablo Sabbatella, founder of Opsek, discussed the implications of this incident during a livestream event on October 14, emphasizing the need for users to reconsider who they trust with their cryptocurrency keys. As the incident unfolds, the focus shifts from the specifics of the hack to the broader issue of security in the cryptocurrency space.
