Vitalik Buterin Advocates for a More Autonomous Ethereum Community
At the Network State Conference held in Singapore on October 9, 2026, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, emphasized the protocol's evolution towards a more decentralized leadership model. He asserted that Ethereum is capable of progressing without his direct involvement, as community members increasingly assume responsibility for its core principles.
Buterin highlighted the 'Lean Ethereum' initiative, which aims to overhaul significant components of the protocol to enhance its efficiency. He noted that advancements in artificial intelligence could expedite this ambitious engineering project. Furthermore, he indicated that the Ethereum Foundation (EF) should reduce its size and focus on essential aspects such as censorship resistance, open source development, privacy, and security, leaving other areas open for community engagement.
The concept of the 'walkaway test' was introduced by Buterin, suggesting that Ethereum should continue to function effectively even if any single individual or team were to withdraw. This idea reflects his ongoing commitment to fostering a resilient ecosystem that relies on a broad contributor base rather than on any single founder. As the EF narrows its focus, it may create opportunities for other teams and organizations within the Ethereum ecosystem to step in and contribute.
