Charles Schwab Launches Direct Trading for Bitcoin and Ethereum

Charles Schwab, a prominent financial services company based in the United States, has initiated direct trading of Bitcoin and Ethereum for eligible retail clients. The firm manages approximately $13.33 trillion in client assets and boasts 40.3 million active brokerage accounts. This move marks a significant expansion into the cryptocurrency market, as the company aims to provide its clients with more diverse investment options.

CEO Rick Wurster announced that Schwab is gradually implementing cryptocurrency transfer functions, allowing clients to move digital assets in and out of their accounts. The company plans to introduce trading for additional cryptocurrencies, including Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink, by the end of 2026. Currently, transfers are supported on the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks, with specific requirements for withdrawal address registration.

The trading fees for Schwab's cryptocurrency offerings are set at 0.75%, with a minimum transaction amount of $1 and a maximum limit of $2 million. Wurster indicated that cryptocurrency trading is expected to become a new revenue stream for the company, although the platform is not yet available to clients in New York, Louisiana, U.S. territories, or international markets.
