Charles Schwab Launches Direct Bitcoin and Ethereum Trading for Retail Clients

Charles Schwab Corporation has introduced a new service allowing its retail clients to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum directly, marking a significant shift from previous offerings that only provided indirect exposure to cryptocurrencies. This service, which is available to Schwab's client base of 40.1 million retail investors, was launched through the Schwab Crypto account on April 16, 2026, with full availability achieved by October 15-16, 2026.

The trading platform enables clients to engage in spot trading of Bitcoin and Ethereum via Schwab.com, Schwab Mobile, and the thinkorswim platform. Transactions incur a flat fee of 0.75% on trades valued between $1 and $2 million. Notably, Paxos is responsible for trade execution and asset custody, ensuring that Schwab clients can securely manage their cryptocurrency holdings.

While the service is a significant development in the brokerage's offerings, it is not available to all clients. Residents of New York and Louisiana, along with certain client categories, are excluded from accessing the service. Additionally, the current trading options are limited to Bitcoin and Ethereum, although Schwab plans to expand its offerings to include Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink by the end of 2026. This move comes as Schwab seeks to tap into the growing demand for direct cryptocurrency trading, following similar initiatives by competitors such as Fidelity and E*TRADE.
