Coinbase and Marqeta Launch Stablecoin-Backed Payment Cards for Enterprises

Coinbase and Marqeta have announced an expansion of their partnership to introduce stablecoin-backed payment cards aimed at enterprise customers. This development, revealed on October 16, 2026, allows businesses to utilize stablecoins for transactions at any merchant that accepts traditional cards, without the need for the merchant to be aware of the cryptocurrency involvement.

Under the new arrangement, Coinbase will manage the custody of stablecoin balances, facilitate conversions into fiat currency, and oversee on-chain settlements through its blockchain, Base. Marqeta will handle the card issuance, payment processing, and maintain relationships with financial institutions and card networks. This collaboration aims to provide businesses with enhanced spending capabilities, including 24/7 funding options, which traditional banking systems typically do not offer.

This partnership builds on a previous collaboration between the two companies, where Marqeta powered the launch of Coinbase’s crypto spending card for individual users in 2020-2021. The new initiative shifts focus from individual consumers to enterprise-level solutions, targeting both crypto-native companies and traditional firms looking to integrate digital assets into their payment operations. Marqeta's significant processing volume, which reached nearly $400 billion in 2025, underscores its capacity to support this expansion in over 40 countries.
