U.S. SEC Approves Binary Options for 23 Publicly Traded Companies
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved a rule change that allows the listing of binary options linked to the key performance indicators of 23 publicly traded companies in the United States. This decision, announced by SEC Chairman Paul Atkins on October 13, involves metrics from notable companies such as Coinbase, Robinhood, and Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA).
The binary options will be cash-settled, European-style contracts that can only be exercised at expiration. The performance indicators for these options include Coinbase's trading volume, Robinhood's customer count and revenue, and Marathon's Bitcoin production. The data used for settlement will come from official documents submitted to the SEC, rather than from earnings presentations.
Cboe Global Markets, which submitted the rule change, plans to launch these contracts within the month. Robinhood is anticipated to be the first brokerage to offer these binary options to retail investors. However, trading will commence only after Cboe Clear U.S. receives temporary registration, with another related application still pending review.
