Starknet Plans Transition to Layer 1 Network by 2027

Starknet, a blockchain network developed by StarkWare, is considering a transition to a Layer 1 (L1) network, aiming to become the first fully quantum-resistant blockchain by 2027. This announcement was made on October 8, 2026, via a post on the social media platform X, although it did not include a governance proposal for the transition.

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, discussed the implications of this move in a recent interview. He highlighted the need for Starknet to establish its own settlement guarantees, which would replace those currently provided by Ethereum. The transition is expected to significantly impact Starknet's economic model, including its revenue and emissions.

In addition to the L1 transition, StarkWare recently launched Shadow Accounts, a privacy feature that allows users to maintain separate addresses for different applications, and OffMarket, a trading service on Polymarket that does not require linking positions to a public wallet. These developments are part of StarkWare's broader strategy to enhance user privacy and security in the evolving blockchain landscape.
