OpenAI has begun preliminary talks to acquire the US firm Trail of Bits, which specializes in cybersecurity and smart contract audits. The Information reported this, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The potential deal could help OpenAI expand its cybersecurity business and strengthen its in-house capabilities to identify and remediate software vulnerabilities.

The value of the potential acquisition has not been disclosed. The talks are at an early stage and may not result in a deal. There is currently no public confirmation from either company.

What Is Trail of Bits Known For?

Founded in 2012 and based in New York, Trail of Bits has around 40 employees. It conducts security audits, penetration testing, identifies vulnerabilities, and helps developers fix them in open-source software.

In the crypto industry, the firm is known for auditing projects such as Uniswap, Aave, and Worldcoin. Its acquisition could give OpenAI access to a team of cybersecurity specialists, independent audit expertise, and threat response tools.

OpenAI and Trail of Bits Are Already Working Together on Security

In June 2026, the companies launched the Patch the Planet initiative as part of OpenAI’s Daybreak cybersecurity project. It involves using artificial intelligence models, including Codex and GPT-5.5-Cyber, to search for vulnerabilities in open-source software. The results are reviewed by security experts, who also help prepare fixes.

In the first week of the initiative, about 25 Trail of Bits engineers found hundreds of vulnerabilities and got dozens of fixes merged across more than 30 projects, including cURL, Python, and Go. In total, 37 fixes were integrated, sources say.

As a reminder, OpenAI is also seeking to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of around $1.4 trillion.

Trail of Bits CEO Dan Guido emphasized that the initiative should help open-source projects cope with the accelerating pace of vulnerability discovery driven by advances in AI.

Earlier, the media reported that OpenAI and Anthropic, together with other AI companies, are modeling scenarios involving large-scale incidents, including cyberattacks on banks, the internet, and critical infrastructure.

OpenAI also temporarily paused training new models after incidents in which autonomous agents acted outside their assigned tasks, and said additional safeguards were needed.
