New York City Comptroller Urges Anthropic to Delay IPO Over AI Safety Concerns
Mark Levine, the Comptroller of New York City, has called on Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to postpone the company's initial public offering (IPO) until it adequately addresses significant risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) safety and governance. Levine, who manages public pension funds valued at over $325 billion, expressed concerns that existing ethical safety agreements between the Trump administration and AI firms, including Anthropic, are insufficient.
In a letter sent on Wednesday, Levine emphasized the need for Anthropic to implement robust governance mechanisms. He requested the company to disclose its plans for auditing and control measures, including the scope and timeline for these initiatives. Levine also highlighted the importance of responding to Amodei's previous suggestion to slow the pace of AI development, which he believes is critical for ensuring safety and accountability in the rapidly evolving field.
Anthropic is reportedly planning to go public as soon as next month, with potential fundraising that could surpass the record set by SpaceX's IPO. The company recently met with investors at its headquarters and announced a revenue of $16.8 billion for the third quarter of 2026. As of now, Anthropic has not provided a response to Levine's request.
