Singaporean Pleads Guilty to $245 Million Bitcoin Theft in Landmark Case

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean national residing in Miami, has pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy that resulted in the theft of over $245 million in Bitcoin. This plea, entered in a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., is notable as it marks the first instance where federal prosecutors have applied racketeering laws to a cryptocurrency-related crime. Lam's criminal activities spanned from October 2023 to May 2025, during which he and his associates stole more than 4,100 BTC, including a significant incident in August 2024 where a single victim lost the entire amount in one of the largest crypto heists recorded.

Lam's extravagant spending included luxury items such as exotic cars valued at up to $3.8 million each, private jet charters, and nightclub expenses that reportedly reached $500,000 in one night. He was arrested on September 18, 2025, at a rental property in Miami. The court has mandated restitution of approximately $245 million to compensate the victims, with a status hearing scheduled for December 8, 2026. Lam faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, highlighting the serious nature of his offenses.

The case represents a significant shift in legal approaches to cryptocurrency crimes, as the Department of Justice's use of RICO charges allows for targeting entire criminal enterprises rather than just individual actors. This development raises important questions about the security and regulation of cryptocurrency, particularly as Lam's operation involved sophisticated social engineering tactics to deceive victims into revealing sensitive information. The involvement of at least 12 co-defendants across various jurisdictions further underscores the extensive coordination required for such large-scale thefts.
