Solana Reduces Block Time by 17% to Enhance Network Speed
On September 15, 2026, Solana announced a reduction in its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, effectively increasing the network's clock speed by nearly 17%. This adjustment allows the blockchain to produce approximately four blocks per second, up from the previous rate of about 3.3 blocks. The change is expected to provide wallets, exchanges, and trading applications with more real-time network status updates.
Despite the increase in speed, the overall transaction capacity of the Solana network remains unchanged. The allowed computation and data volume per slot has decreased proportionally, meaning that while transactions may be processed faster, the total processing limit of the network has not improved. This adjustment marks the third phase in a series of reductions aimed at optimizing network performance, following previous reductions from 400 milliseconds to 350 and then to 300 milliseconds.
With the epoch still fixed at 432,000 slots, the expected duration has now decreased from approximately 36 hours to around 30 hours. This change reduces the time available for offline signing and delayed approvals. Solana has not yet provided a timeline for a potential further reduction to 200 milliseconds, as the network will only proceed if the block skip rate remains acceptable at the new 250 milliseconds stage.
