Tokenized U.S. Treasury Holdings Show Global Distribution, U.S. Investors Lag Behind

Data from Chainalysis reveals that only 10.5% of tokenized U.S. Treasury holdings are held by investors in the United States, placing the country fourth in terms of geographical distribution. In contrast, Italy, Portugal, and Singapore collectively account for 66.9% of these holdings, with Italy at 29.9%, Portugal at 18.8%, and Singapore at 18.2%. Japan leads in the number of holders at 16.4%, but their holdings represent a mere 0.4% of the total value, indicating a concentration of value among a few large overseas investors.

The report highlights significant growth in the tokenized U.S. Treasury market, which expanded by 125% over the past year, increasing from $6.86 billion to $15.42 billion as of July 1, 2026. This surge is attributed to the tokenization process, which has lowered the minimum investment threshold, enabling international investors to access U.S. Treasuries without the need for a U.S. brokerage account. This trend reflects a growing interest in tokenized assets among global investors, despite the relatively small share held by U.S. residents.
