Affirm (AFRM) Stock Surges 5% on Transformer AI Loan Approval System Launch
Key Takeaways
- Affirm shares climbed 5.5% in early Thursday trading following the introduction of a transformer-based artificial intelligence system for instant loan approvals
- The platform is currently operational across U.S. checkouts and leverages 14 years of proprietary underwriting data at the transaction level
- Testing revealed the AI system greenlit additional qualified applicants and generated 3.4% higher purchase completion rates compared to control groups
- Chief Accounting Officer Siphelele Jiyane offloaded approximately $1.95 million in shares on September 14th, trimming his position by 12.51%
- Analysts maintain a “Moderate Buy” rating on AFRM with a consensus target of $98.78, significantly higher than the recent trading level of $71.58
Affirm Holdings (AFRM) experienced a 5.5% surge during premarket hours Thursday following the fintech company’s announcement of a sophisticated transformer-based artificial intelligence system engineered to deliver quicker and more precise lending decisions during the checkout process.
Prior to the announcement, shares were hovering around $71.58, representing a considerable gap below the Street’s average target of $98.78.
The newly deployed system is currently operational throughout the United States and leverages a comprehensive 14-year archive of Affirm’s proprietary transaction-level underwriting information. The platform employs advanced machine learning techniques to evaluate both the sequence and timing of events within a consumer’s credit profile, marking a significant advancement over the company’s legacy systems.
A particularly noteworthy feature of this technology is its approach to borrowers with limited credit files. According to Affirm, the AI system successfully approved additional candidates that would have been declined under the previous framework, including individuals possessing sparse credit histories and no established FICO scores.
Enhanced Performance With Maintained Credit Quality
During the initial deployment phase, the system delivered a 3.4% increase in completed transactions when measured against a control group. Affirm further noted that these incremental loans demonstrated superior performance metrics compared to similar expansions conducted under previous machine learning frameworks, indicating the AI is identifying higher-quality credit risks rather than simply broadening approval thresholds.
Libor Michalek, President at Affirm, explained that the transformer architecture enables the organization to derive fresh insights from existing datasets. “Gaining clearer visibility into credit histories empowers us to responsibly approve more applicants,” he stated.
The system detects patterns both within individual credit accounts and across multiple accounts, monitoring how these patterns evolve over time. Affirm developed a custom algorithm to maintain model transparency while ensuring sufficient speed for real-time checkout processing.
The company emphasized that universal approval is not the objective. Affirm stated that extending credit to consumers lacking repayment capacity does not serve the company’s interests.
Recent Insider Transactions Attract Notice
Not all indicators are positive. Chief Accounting Officer Siphelele Jiyane divested 26,980 shares on September 14th at an average of $72.19, generating approximately $1.95 million in proceeds. This transaction decreased his holdings by 12.51%, leaving him with 188,711 remaining shares.
Jiyane had previously sold 25,000 shares on September 4th at $72.41 per share. The consecutive transactions may invite examination from market observers, although insider sales don’t necessarily indicate bearish sentiment.
Regarding financial performance, Affirm delivered $4.62 earnings per share in its latest quarterly report, substantially exceeding the consensus forecast of $0.35. Revenue reached $1.07 billion, reflecting 33.1% year-over-year growth, though falling marginally short of the $1.11 billion expectation.
Analyst sentiment has been generally favorable. Piper Sandler elevated its price objective from $103 to $115 while maintaining an overweight designation. BMO Capital Markets and Citigroup both reaffirmed outperform ratings.
Among the 32 analysts tracking the company, 24 maintain Buy recommendations while 8 have Hold ratings.
Technical indicators show Affirm’s 50-day moving average at $75.43, while the 200-day moving average stands at $66.39.
