Alibaba (BABA) Stock Slips 5% Following Controversial $10.2B Capital Raise
Key Takeaways
- Bernstein SocGen reduced BABA’s price target from $180 to $165, maintaining an Outperform rating
- Shares have declined approximately 5% following the announcement of a $10.2 billion equity offering on Aug. 23
- Market participants are puzzled by the capital raise given Alibaba’s existing $30.7 billion net cash position
- Bernstein’s research indicates AI chip investments may achieve payback within 2.5 to 3 years
- Consensus rating on BABA remains Strong Buy with analysts projecting an average target of $189.46
Shares of Alibaba (BABA) are currently trading at $113.24, reflecting a decline of approximately 5% following the company’s Aug. 23 announcement of a $10.2 billion equity offering aimed at financing its artificial intelligence expansion initiatives.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
Bernstein SocGen analyst Robin Zhu recognized shareholder concerns and adjusted his BABA price objective downward to $165 from $180, representing an approximately 8% decrease. However, he maintained his Outperform recommendation.
Zhu noted that investor disappointment is understandable. The primary concern centers on a fundamental question: what justifies additional capital raising when the company maintains $30.7 billion in net cash reserves?
The capital raise encompasses a primary issuance of 710 million shares offered at a discount. Following the announcement, Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai acquired 720,000 Hong Kong-listed shares, a transaction interpreted as a demonstration of management’s conviction in the company’s strategic trajectory.
In its most recent financial report, Alibaba’s capital expenditures surged 75% year-over-year to roughly $10.07 billion, underscoring the magnitude of its AI infrastructure buildout.
Bernstein Projects Accelerated Return Timeline
Notwithstanding investor reservations, Zhu’s assessment indicates the AI expenditures may generate returns more rapidly than market expectations.
Bernstein constructed a data-center financial model based on Alibaba’s current Zhenwu 810E chip technology. The analysis projects a three-year capital expenditure recovery period for this processor.
The more advanced M890 chip demonstrates superior economics. Following its commercial launch in August, industry feedback indicates an even shorter 2.5-year payback timeline.
Market pricing for server rental capacity has trended upward in recent months, reflecting robust demand for AI computing infrastructure.
Conversations with major customers similarly indicate tight market conditions, supporting the rationale for sustained capital deployment.
Bernstein’s assessment incorporated insights from Alibaba management, AI research laboratories, and industry contacts throughout the AI and semiconductor value chains.
According to InvestingPro data, Alibaba maintains a cash position exceeding its debt obligations, bolstering its financial strength notwithstanding the recent capital raise.
Analyst Community Perspectives
Baird has similarly reduced its Alibaba price objective, lowering it to $160 from $164. The firm highlighted margin compression stemming from substantial AI capital allocation and challenging e-commerce market dynamics.
Mizuho adopted a contrasting stance, reaffirming its Outperform rating alongside a $195 price target. The firm emphasized robust cloud segment expansion and margin improvement fueled by AI-related demand.
BofA Securities has preserved its Buy recommendation on the shares following the capital raise announcement.
The company has also recently introduced Qwen3.8-Flash, an artificial intelligence model featuring 125 billion parameters engineered to rival solutions from Anthropic and DeepSeek.
The broader Wall Street perspective on BABA remains positive. The stock holds a Strong Buy consensus rating supported by 12 Buy recommendations issued within the past three months. The mean price target stands at $189.46, suggesting approximately 67% potential appreciation from present levels.
