Amazon (AMZN) Stock Surges 4% Following Evercore Upgrade and Major AI Infrastructure Deal
Key Takeaways
- Shares of Amazon gained approximately 4% following Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney’s price target increase to $355 from $315
- Recent survey findings revealed 92% penetration among U.S. online shoppers and increasing AI-powered retail momentum
- Amazon Web Services intends to deploy 2 million Nvidia GPUs between 2027-2028, signaling robust cloud infrastructure expansion
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating on AMZN with a consensus target price of $334
- The company’s Q2 earnings showed EPS of $5.75, significantly exceeding the $1.82 estimate, while revenue jumped 19.6% year over year
Shares of Amazon (AMZN) surged approximately 4% during Friday’s trading session, starting at $266.43, following a bullish analyst call from Evercore ISI’s Mark Mahaney, who elevated his price target from $315 to $355 while maintaining his Buy recommendation.
According to TipRanks, Mahaney holds the 423rd position among over 12,500 financial analysts, posting an impressive 84% accuracy rate on Amazon calls with an average one-year return of 21.81% per rating. His analytical history lends credibility to his current assessment.
The revised price target follows data from Evercore’s recent U.S. Online Retail survey, which revealed multiple encouraging indicators for Amazon’s e-commerce operations.
The e-commerce giant reaches 92% of American online shoppers, significantly outpacing Walmart. Customer satisfaction metrics register at 76%, while approximately 60% of Prime subscribers indicated they would maintain their membership despite a $20 annual price increase.
Emerging AI technologies are driving additional commerce. Survey respondents showed that 57% of Alexa AI users purchased products they hadn’t actively searched for, indicating AI is generating incremental sales rather than simply capturing existing shopping intentions.
Enhanced Delivery Performance and Prime Member Value
Logistics performance metrics also showed improvement. Standard same-day delivery adoption recovered to 49%, while Prime members utilizing same-day delivery now spend 3.1 times more than non-Prime customers—the largest spending differential Mahaney has recorded.
Amazon’s Perishable Checkout feature is driving grocery category growth, with approximately half of users who encounter it adding fresh products to their orders.
Regarding technology infrastructure, AWS continues its aggressive expansion. The company has announced plans to acquire 2 million premium Nvidia GPUs, featuring Blackwell Ultra and Rubin processors, throughout 2027 and 2028. This increases Amazon’s total disclosed chip acquisition commitment to approximately 3 million units.
Market participants interpret this substantial GPU investment as clear evidence that AI-related workload demand remains robust across AWS platforms, with Amazon demonstrating commitment through significant capital allocation.
Impressive Q2 Financial Performance
Amazon’s latest quarterly results, disclosed July 30, reinforced the optimistic outlook. The company delivered Q2 EPS of $5.75 compared to analyst expectations of $1.82, exceeding estimates by $3.93 per share. Total revenue reached $200.61 billion, surpassing the $197.03 billion forecast and marking a 19.6% increase compared to the prior-year period.
AWS revenue expanded roughly 37% to $42.2 billion during Q2, while Amazon’s artificial intelligence and semiconductor divisions each achieved annualized revenue run rates exceeding $25 billion.
Among institutional investors, Athena Wealth Management expanded its Amazon holdings by 47% throughout Q2. Multiple additional investment firms similarly increased their positions during this timeframe.
The broader Wall Street perspective remains decidedly bullish. With 39 Buy ratings and one Hold recommendation issued over the previous three months, the consensus stands at Strong Buy. The average analyst price target of $334.05 suggests approximately 25% potential appreciation from current trading levels.
Mahaney’s updated $355 target exceeds the Wall Street consensus, indicating 33% upside potential from Friday’s opening price.
