Anthropic's Claude AI Identifies New Enzyme System with CRISPR-like Features
Anthropic's Claude AI model has made a significant discovery by identifying a previously uncharacterized enzyme system in bacteriophages that shares some features with the CRISPR technology. This breakthrough emerged after approximately 950 Claude agents conducted an extensive search of genomic data, analyzing over 200,000 reverse transcriptases. The AI's ability to rapidly process this data has demonstrated its potential to contribute directly to biological discoveries, although the specific function of the newly identified system remains unknown.
The standout candidate from this research is named array-associated reverse transcriptase (ART). This enzyme pairs with a neighboring partner gene and features a long array of evenly spaced DNA repeats. Early laboratory work indicates that the ART repeat array is expressed as multiple distinct short RNAs, a characteristic that is significant because CRISPR systems also produce RNAs that enable programmability. Despite these similarities, researchers caution that ART has not yet been shown to function like CRISPR, and further experiments are necessary to understand its components and potential applications.
The discovery is part of Anthropic's new life sciences research program, which aims to leverage AI in the field of genomics and drug discovery. The company has established a molecular biology laboratory in the Bay Area, where human scientists conduct experiments while Claude handles data searches and analysis. This approach highlights the potential for AI to compress the early discovery phase of life sciences research, offering a promising avenue for future biotechnology tools. MIT and Broad Institute professor Feng Zhang, a pioneer in CRISPR gene editing, has reviewed the findings and emphasized the need for further investigation into this exciting development.
