Bitcoin and Ether ETFs See Significant Inflows, Marking Positive Trend for 2026

US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have experienced a notable turnaround in 2026, with net inflows turning positive for the first time since April. On September 21, the funds recorded approximately $1 billion in net inflows, with SoSoValue reporting $998.95 million for the day, marking it as the largest single-day inflow of the year. Leading the charge were BlackRock's IBIT with $381.4 million, ARK 21Shares' ARKB at $289.1 million, and Fidelity's FBTC at $238.8 million. This surge in investment comes amid a broader market rally, with bitcoin prices climbing about 35% since August 19, reaching $87,395, the highest level since January.

In addition to bitcoin, spot Ether ETFs also saw significant interest, attracting approximately $270 million on the same day, their best performance since October 2025. The positive sentiment in the market is attributed to holders who are now sitting on gains, making them less likely to sell. Furthermore, a wave of short liquidations has cleared out positions, suggesting that future price movements may rely more on genuine demand rather than forced buying.

Despite the positive inflow figures, analysts caution that the sustainability of this trend remains uncertain. Nearly $919 million in crypto short positions were liquidated during the recent price surge, indicating that part of the rally was driven by forced buying from traders betting on price declines. The average cost basis for ETF holders is estimated between $81,700 and $82,000, suggesting that many are now back in profit for the first time since January. Observers will be closely monitoring whether inflows continue and how the market reacts to price movements in the coming weeks.
