Archer Aviation (ACHR) Stock Drops 6% as ARK Invest Scoops Up More Shares
Key Highlights
- ACHR shares slipped 5.66% on Wednesday, finishing at $5.50, with no negative company-specific developments reported.
- Climbing Treasury yields (10-year reached approximately 4.84%, near a three-year peak) triggered a risk-off sentiment affecting growth equities.
- Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest acquired 575,700 ACHR shares on September 8, totaling approximately $3.35 million.
- The stock has declined about 27% year to date and sits 14.1% lower since releasing its most recent quarterly results.
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus rating with a $11.60 average target price, suggesting potential gains exceeding 110%.
Archer Aviation experienced a 5.66% decline on Wednesday, settling at $5.50 per share. The pullback occurred without any unfavorable announcements directly from the electric aircraft manufacturer.
Market-wide headwinds drove the downturn. The Nasdaq Composite slid 0.6% while the Russell 2000 tumbled 1.37% as investors retreated from speculative positions amid increasing oil prices and elevated government bond yields.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed to approximately 4.84%, marking its highest closing reading in close to three years. This increase followed the Treasury Department’s announcement of a $6 billion bond repurchase program that fell short of market expectations.
Elevated yields particularly impact pre-revenue growth enterprises. Archer exemplifies this category as the company maintains significant capital expenditures for aircraft engineering, regulatory approvals, and market entry preparations without generating substantial commercial passenger income.
The stock has retreated approximately 27% since January. Shares have also declined 14.1% following the company’s August 10 earnings release, which revealed a per-share loss of $0.34 alongside $5 million in quarterly revenue—significantly exceeding analyst projections of $1.94 million.
Cathie Wood’s Firm Accumulates Shares
Amid the market weakness, ARK Invest made a notable purchase. The investment firm acquired 575,700 ACHR shares on September 8 through the ARK Innovation ETF, representing approximately $3.35 million based on Tuesday’s market price.
While this transaction occurred immediately before Wednesday’s downturn, it demonstrates sustained institutional support from a prominent stakeholder in the aviation technology sector.
From an operational perspective, Archer recently launched its “No Roads” nationwide demonstration tour featuring the Midnight eVTOL aircraft. The initiative included a piloted roundtrip flight between Salinas and Hollister in California, advancing the company’s real-world testing program.
Additionally, Archer is pursuing the acquisition of three Boeing divisions: Wisk Aero, Insitu, and SkyGrid. Under the agreement terms, Boeing will obtain a 16.75% ownership position in Archer. This strategic transaction aims to enhance Archer’s technological infrastructure and operational capabilities.
Wall Street’s Perspective
The analyst community maintains a generally optimistic outlook on Archer. Six analysts have published ratings over the last three months, establishing a Strong Buy consensus recommendation with a $11.60 mean price target. This forecast represents potential appreciation exceeding 110% from Wednesday’s closing price.
Price target estimates span from $12.00 at Canaccord Genuity to $18.00 at Wells Fargo. Both HC Wainwright and UBS reiterated Buy-equivalent recommendations on August 11.
However, sentiment isn’t universally bullish. Weiss Ratings maintains a Sell recommendation on the shares. When incorporating all tracked analysts, the broader consensus shifts to “Hold” with an $11.50 average target.
Insider activity has drawn attention recently. During the past 90 days, company insiders divested approximately $1.14 million in stock, including transactions by CFO Priya Gupta and insider Eric Lentell, although certain sales related to tax obligations on vesting equity compensation.
ACHR shares traded approximately 1.4% higher in Thursday’s pre-market session.
