Asia-Pacific Markets Show Mixed Trends Amid Economic Concerns

Asian stock markets displayed mixed results on Friday, with Japan's Nikkei index on track for its worst weekly performance in over a month, down approximately 4%. The broader Topix index was also set for a decline of around 3.5%. Rising oil prices and increasing bond yields contributed to the negative sentiment, particularly in light of escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In contrast, South Korea's KOSPI index reversed early losses to trade higher, buoyed by gains in chipmakers, although it remained on course for a weekly loss of about 1%. Meanwhile, China's Vice Finance Minister Liao Min announced plans for additional fiscal support as the Chinese economy shows signs of slowing down, emphasizing the need for policy continuity.

Economic data from Japan revealed that core consumer inflation rose by 1.8% year-on-year in July, aligning with forecasts and strengthening the case for a potential interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan at its upcoming meeting in September. The Japanese yen struggled against other major currencies, while the euro, sterling, New Zealand dollar, and Australian dollar all gained ground against the US dollar, reflecting investor concerns over US fiscal credibility.
