Asian Markets Decline Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions and Economic Data

Asian equity markets experienced significant declines on Wednesday, driven by escalating tensions between the UAE and Iran, as well as a diplomatic rift involving France. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a formal halt to all trade and financial transactions with Iran, following allegations that Iran launched missiles against the UAE, which Iran has denied. This trade suspension is seen as a major setback for Iran, given Dubai's critical role in its import markets.

In South Korea, the KOSPI index opened down 5% and quickly fell to a 6% decline, triggering a temporary halt in trading. Major companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix saw their stock prices drop by approximately 7%. Japan's Nikkei 225 also fell more than 3%, with significant losses reported for companies like Tokyo Electron and Kioxia. Chinese equities opened lower as well, reflecting the broader regional sell-off.

On the economic front, the Reserve Bank of Australia's Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser stated that inflation remains too high, suggesting that further rate hikes may be necessary if inflation does not ease. Meanwhile, Japan reported a 9.7% month-on-month increase in core machinery orders for June, indicating a recovery in business investment. In Australia, wages grew by 0.8% in the June quarter, consistent with expectations. Additionally, the Trump administration announced a three-day delay on planned 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, following productive discussions in Washington.
