South Korea's KOSPI Surpasses 7,000 Amid AI Optimism Despite Geopolitical Tensions

South Korea's KOSPI index surged past the 7,000 mark on Wednesday, reaching approximately 7,076, driven by renewed enthusiasm in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor stocks. The index opened near 6,973 and experienced a 2% increase during the trading session, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have kept oil prices and interest rates elevated.

The rally was primarily fueled by institutional and corporate buying, with net purchases of around 565 billion won and 678 billion won, respectively. In contrast, retail investors and foreign entities sold into the strength, recording net sales of approximately 1.1 trillion won and 165 billion won. Major chip manufacturers, including SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, contributed to the gains, rising by around 4% and 1% respectively, as most large-cap stocks on the KOSPI traded higher.

Analysts attribute the KOSPI's performance to a recovery in the AI and semiconductor narrative following the launch of GPT-6, with earnings estimates for the index remaining stable despite recent market volatility. This trend was mirrored in Japan, where the Nikkei index rose about 0.6% after a decline the previous day. Meanwhile, South Korea's KOSDAQ index also saw a 2% increase, supported by net buying from foreign investors and institutions. The divergence between Asian markets and Wall Street, which closed lower due to geopolitical concerns, highlights the current dominance of AI optimism in shaping market sentiment.
