Asian Markets Decline Amid Rising US Inflation and Bond Yields

Asian equity markets experienced significant declines on Friday, with Japan's Nikkei index falling approximately 2% and South Korea's Kospi dropping around 3%. This downturn follows a challenging session on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all closed lower for the fourth consecutive day, pressured by rising bond yields and inflation data.

The catalyst for the market's decline was a stronger-than-expected producer price index (PPI) report from the United States, which revealed a 0.4% increase in final demand prices for August, pushing the annual rate to 5.4%. This data prompted traders to adjust their expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike, now pricing in a 70% chance of a 25 basis point increase at the upcoming meeting, up from 62% prior to the report.

Additionally, Brent crude oil prices surged more than 6% on Thursday, briefly exceeding $108 per barrel, driven by concerns related to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The rise in oil prices adds further inflationary pressure, particularly affecting energy-importing nations such as Japan and South Korea. As markets await the upcoming US consumer price index (CPI) report, volatility is expected to persist, with investors remaining cautious amid these economic indicators.
