Bank of America Warns of Potential AI Investment Bust Following Surge in Spending

Bank of America has issued a warning regarding the artificial intelligence (AI) investment landscape, suggesting that it may be on the brink of a classic capital-cycle risk. The bank highlights a significant increase in capital expenditure expectations among hyperscalers, which have surged from $330 billion to $1 trillion, representing approximately 3% of the United States' GDP. This dramatic rise in spending is accompanied by intensifying competition and a decline in prices, raising concerns about the sustainability of the current investment boom.

Despite the growing enthusiasm for AI technologies, the prices of AI tokens have plummeted by around 50% since the summer of 2026. This decline has sparked worries that the increasing adoption of AI may not lead to adequate revenue generation to support the heightened levels of investment. Bank of America cautions that while AI technology itself may thrive, investors could face significant challenges due to overinvestment and diminishing returns.
