U.S. Import and Export Prices Rise Sharply in September

In September 2026, U.S. trade inflation exceeded expectations, indicating ongoing price pressures in the economy. Import prices increased by 1.1%, surpassing the forecast of 0.8%, while export prices rose by 2.2%, significantly higher than the anticipated 1.0%.

Year-over-year, import prices have surged by 8.1%, and export prices have climbed by 11.6%. Notably, petroleum import prices saw a substantial increase of 4.6%. These rising costs are raising concerns about inflation ahead of the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting in October.

The data suggests that stronger-than-expected trade prices, particularly in energy, are contributing to inflationary pressures, which may influence monetary policy decisions in the near future.
