Bill Ackman Dumps Alphabet (GOOGL) for Netflix (NFLX): Here’s Why
Key Takeaways
- Pershing Square completely liquidated its Alphabet holdings during Q2 while establishing a fresh Netflix position.
- Netflix shares currently trade at $78.25, representing a 42% decline from the June 2025 peak of $126.71.
- For the first time in its history as a publicly traded entity, Alphabet recorded negative free cash flow and boosted 2026 capex projections to $200 billion.
- Analysts maintain a “Moderate Buy” stance on Netflix with a consensus price target reaching $96.65.
- Following its 52-week bottom, Netflix climbed 13% throughout August, while institutional ownership stands at approximately 81%.
During the second quarter, Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square executed a significant strategic shift, completely exiting its Alphabet holdings while initiating a position in Netflix. This calculated maneuver offers insight into where this prominent hedge fund manager identifies compelling investment opportunities in today’s market.
Trading at $78.25 after Friday’s opening price of $82.67, Netflix shares remain 42% beneath their June 2025 all-time peak of $126.71. The stock touched a 12-month bottom at $65.08. However, the recent downturn has caught Ackman’s attention as an attractive entry point.
Investor sentiment turned cautious after Netflix came up short in acquisition attempts for both Warner Bros. Discovery and Roku, triggering worries about expansion limitations. Nevertheless, the core business metrics remain robust. Netflix maintains its dominant position across all subscription streaming platforms in key metrics: monthly active users, revenue generation, subscriber retention, and television viewing duration.
Netflix’s latest quarterly results showed earnings per share of $0.80, surpassing projections by $0.01. The streaming giant generated $12.56 billion in revenue, marking a 13.4% year-over-year increase. The company boasts a net margin of 28.22% alongside a return on equity reaching 40.02%.
Wall Street analysts project annual earnings growth of 21% over the coming three-year period. Trading at a P/E ratio near 24.7, the valuation appears attractive given the anticipated growth trajectory. The average analyst price target of $96.65 suggests potential upside of approximately 24% from present levels.
During Q2, NEOS Investment Management expanded its Netflix stake by 10.2%, purchasing an additional 300,145 units to bring total holdings to approximately $230.6 million in value. Institutional investors collectively control roughly 80.93% of outstanding shares.
Wall Street Price Targets and Analyst Views
Wolfe Research upgraded its price objective from $84 to $95 while maintaining an “outperform” designation. Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its “overweight” recommendation with a $90 price target, and UBS held firm on its “buy” rating with a $115 objective. Conversely, China Renaissance reduced its target to $80 accompanied by a “hold” rating, while Seaport Research Partners moved from “buy” to “neutral.”
The aggregate analyst consensus stands at “Moderate Buy,” comprising 4 Strong Buy recommendations, 34 Buy ratings, 16 Hold positions, and 1 Sell rating.
The Reason Behind Ackman’s Alphabet Exit
Alphabet delivered impressive Q2 performance metrics. Revenue climbed 24% to reach $120 billion, while GAAP operating income surged 31% to $41 billion. Google Cloud revenue skyrocketed 82%, marking its fifth straight quarter of accelerating growth.
However, a significant concern emerged in cash flow management. Alphabet experienced negative free cash flow for the first time since becoming a public company. Additionally, the tech giant elevated its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $200 billion, a substantial jump from the previous year’s $91 billion. Such aggressive spending commitments create uncertainty, and Ackman evidently chose not to remain invested while those concerns persist.
Alphabet shares declined following its Q2 earnings announcement and remained approximately 2% below pre-earnings levels as of September 4.
Netflix shares appreciated roughly 13% during August after reaching their 52-week low point. The stock’s 50-day moving average currently sits at $75.43, while the 200-day moving average registers at $84.44.
