Peloton (PTON) Stock Plunges 6% Following Morgan Stanley Downgrade Amid Subscriber Woes
Key Takeaways
- Morgan Stanley lowered Peloton’s rating to Underweight from Equal-weight and reduced the price target from $5.50 to $4.50
- Connected fitness subscriber growth declined 9% year-over-year in fiscal 2026, with gross additions plummeting 78% from their peak levels
- Analyst Nathan Feather at Morgan Stanley emphasizes that challenges facing Peloton are structural rather than cyclical, reflecting broader consumer behavior shifts
- UBS reduced its price objective to $10.00 from $11.00 and lowered fiscal 2027 EBITDA projections to $491M from $526M due to elevated subscriber attrition
- Shares of PTON declined as much as 6.1% during premarket hours, trading significantly below the 52-week peak of $9.20
Peloton stock tumbled up to 6.1% in early premarket activity on Tuesday, touching $5.07, following Morgan Stanley’s decision to downgrade the fitness equipment maker to Underweight from Equal-weight while simultaneously reducing its price objective to $4.50 from $5.50.
Peloton Interactive, Inc., PTON
Nathan Feather, the Morgan Stanley analyst behind the downgrade, cautioned that continued negative earnings adjustments could cast significant doubt on the stock’s long-term investment thesis.
Feather’s primary worry centers on Peloton’s deteriorating subscriber acquisition pipeline. New customer additions have plunged approximately 78% from peak levels, while the connected fitness subscriber base contracted by 9% on a year-over-year basis during fiscal 2026. Morgan Stanley’s projections indicate this contraction will persist through fiscal 2029 with a negative growth trajectory.
The investment bank’s stance is unequivocal: these challenges represent fundamental issues rather than transient obstacles. Feather characterized the pressures as structural in nature, stemming from fundamental changes in consumer fitness preferences and behavior.
Consumer Fitness Preferences Are Evolving Beyond Peloton’s Model
Data from Google Search trends reveals that interest in strength training has expanded at an 8% compound annual growth rate over the last ten years, recently overtaking cardio-related searches for the first time. Meanwhile, traditional gym membership rates are climbing, with 24% of Americans now holding active memberships, up from 20% in 2021.
This evolving landscape poses a fundamental threat to Peloton’s business model, which remains heavily centered on connected fitness equipment and cycling-focused workouts.
Morgan Stanley wasn’t alone in revising its outlook on Tuesday. UBS kept its Buy recommendation intact but lowered its price target on Peloton from $11.00 to $10.00, while simultaneously reducing its fiscal 2027 EBITDA forecast to $491 million from $526 million.
UBS pointed to subscriber churn rates exceeding expectations as the primary catalyst, suggesting the attrition extends beyond the temporary factors previously cited by Peloton leadership.
Having two major Wall Street firms issue downgrades during the same premarket session delivered a compounded bearish message to investors.
Executive Stock Sales Compound Negative Sentiment
Insider trading patterns have further dampened investor confidence. Six company executives offloaded shares during the preceding three-month period, with zero insider purchases recorded during that same timeframe.
Broader market conditions provided little support. The S&P 500 declined 0.3% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8%, and the Nasdaq remained essentially unchanged. Peloton’s steep drop reflected company-specific concerns rather than broader market weakness.
Short interest in PTON currently represents 14.4% of available shares, indicating substantial bearish positioning that could amplify downward price movement.
Shares now trade substantially below the 52-week high of $9.20 and are gravitating toward the lower boundary of the annual trading range at $3.65. For perspective, Peloton achieved an all-time closing high of $167.42 on January 13, 2021.
Morgan Stanley’s revised $4.50 price target represents just a modest premium over that 52-week low.
