Chart of the Week: the long shadow of quantitative easing
Bitcoin (BTC) Price Stabilizes Around $78K Amid Middle East Tensions and ETF Volatility
Key Highlights
- Bitcoin maintained a trading range between $77,580 and $78,800 as Middle East conflicts drove oil prices higher by approximately 2%
- BTC leads all major assets in August with a 23% gain, outpacing gold’s 9% increase and the Nasdaq’s 4% rise
- Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $242.3M inflows on August 27, but reversed with $201.9M outflows the following day, breaking a nine-session positive streak
- BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs collected more than $1.58B in capital over the previous seven days
- Critical resistance levels identified at $79,400–$80,800; downside support positioned near $77,000–$75,000
Bitcoin continues trading within a narrow band from $77,580 to $78,800 despite heightened geopolitical instability affecting global markets. Following a U.S. military operation targeting an Iranian installation on an island in the Strait of Hormuz—a critical passage for global oil shipments—energy markets reacted sharply. WTI crude futures surged nearly 2% to reach $85.10 per barrel, while Brent crude advanced to $92.39.

Precious metals saw a decline, with gold falling 0.8% to $4,418 per ounce. Technology stocks also weakened as Nasdaq futures retreated 0.5%. In contrast, Bitcoin demonstrated remarkable stability with minimal price movement.
Throughout August, BTC has surged 23%, establishing itself as the month’s strongest-performing major asset class. During this same timeframe, gold appreciated 9%, while the Nasdaq composite index managed only a 4% advance.
Market analyst Ted Pillows shared his technical assessment on X, observing that Bitcoin is “hovering around the $78,000 level” with deteriorating momentum indicators. His analysis suggests BTC may retreat to $74,000 before attempting another rally beyond $81,000.
Large holder behavior paints a contrasting picture. Blockchain analytics specialist Ali Charts documented that major wallet addresses accumulated more than 39,154 BTC—approximately $3 billion in value—during the previous seven-day period.
Exchange-Traded Fund Activity Reveals Conflicting Trends
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs registered $242.3 million in net inflows on August 27, based on data from Farside Investors. However, this positive momentum reversed sharply on August 28 with $201.9 million in outflows, terminating a nine-day consecutive inflow sequence.
Ethereum-focused ETFs displayed contrasting behavior, recording $102.1 million in fresh capital on August 28—extending their inflow streak to ten consecutive trading sessions.
BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum spot exchange-traded products collectively drew over $1.58 billion in new investment during the past week. MicroStrategy’s Michael Saylor updated his Bitcoin tracking dashboard on August 30 with the caption “We’re back,” suggesting the company may be preparing another corporate purchase.
Upcoming Economic Indicators That May Influence BTC Movement
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium with a notably restrictive tone. He indicated that inflation remains above acceptable levels and that existing monetary conditions lack sufficient tightness. Financial markets are now assigning a 58% probability to an interest rate increase in September.
The coming week features several significant economic releases including the ISM Manufacturing PMI and JOLTS job openings report on Tuesday, ADP employment figures and the Federal Reserve Beige Book on Wednesday, and the official nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.
Giottus CEO Vikram Subbaraj indicated that Bitcoin maintains crucial support around the $77,000 level, while facing resistance in the $79,400 to $80,800 zone.
A sustained daily close exceeding $81,800 would establish a pathway toward $85,000. Conversely, breaking below the $75,000 support threshold could expose BTC to a decline toward $70,000.
The August 28 ETF outflow marked the conclusion of nine straight positive sessions and has introduced increased uncertainty as markets transition into September.
