Wall Street Economists Adjust Core PCE Forecasts Following CPI Data
Bitcoin (BTC) Tumbles Below $78K as Fed’s Warsh Delivers Hawkish Jackson Hole Address
Key Takeaways
- BTC plunged to $78,442 following Kevin Warsh’s cautious Jackson Hole address as Federal Reserve Chair
- The new Fed Chair dismissed recent CPI and PCE improvements, stating inflation progress hasn’t “meaningfully improved”
- Market expectations for a September interest rate increase surged to 59% from 35% within 24 hours
- Bitcoin ETF products experienced $202M in net withdrawals on August 28, breaking a nine-day positive flow pattern
- Despite the pullback, BTC maintains a 26.35% gain for the month, the strongest August showing since 2017
The leading cryptocurrency experienced a steep decline on Friday following Kevin Warsh’s inaugural keynote address as Federal Reserve Chair at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, with BTC touching a low of $78,442 on the Bitstamp exchange.

Warsh adopted a measured stance regarding inflation dynamics. He indicated that recent favorable readings in Consumer Price Index and Personal Consumption Expenditures figures don’t necessarily demonstrate that core inflation patterns have “meaningfully improved,” while reinforcing the central bank’s commitment to the 2% inflation objective.
Market participants interpreted the remarks as decidedly hawkish. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders significantly increased their expectations for a September interest rate increase, with probabilities jumping to over 59% from approximately 35% just one day earlier.
The Fed Chair also declared an end to forward guidance as standard Federal Reserve policy, describing it as a mechanism that has “overstayed its welcome” following its implementation during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis.
The U.S. dollar index strengthened by 0.5% during the session. Bitcoin retreated 3.4% to approximately $77,494, sliding back from its session peak of $81,330.
Market analyst Ted Pillows observed on X that Bitcoin was consolidating around the $80,000 threshold with diminishing upward momentum. He indicated a potential retracement toward the $74,000–$75,000 range could materialize before any renewed bullish movement.
Bitcoin ETF Activity Reverses Course
U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds registered $202 million in net withdrawals on August 28, based on SoSoValue figures reported by Wu Blockchain, terminating a nine-day stretch of positive inflows.
Ethereum-focused ETF products exhibited contrasting behavior, attracting $102 million in net capital and pushing their consecutive inflow run to 10 trading sessions.
Understanding the Previous Week’s 22% Surge
Bitcoin’s recent decline follows an extraordinary 22.2% surge during the prior week — representing its strongest seven-day advance in more than three years.
The powerful rally was driven by positive shifts in U.S. cryptocurrency regulation, increased institutional capital allocation, and what analysts termed the debasement trade. Market participants rotated into hard assets including gold and digital currencies as America’s national debt surpassed $40 trillion while Treasury yields experienced sharp increases.
Cryptocurrency trading firm QCP Capital observed that maintaining price levels above $83,000 requires sustained health in derivatives markets. The firm emphasized that funding rates must remain moderate and open interest should expand steadily, rather than through aggressive leverage accumulation.
As of this writing, BTC has gained 26.35% month-to-date according to CoinGlass tracking, representing its strongest August performance since 2017.
