Boeing (BA) Sweeps Both Sixth-Generation Fighter Programs With F/A-XX Navy Win
TLDR
- The Navy awarded Boeing its F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter jet program last week, valued at over $20 billion during the development phase alone.
- Combined with Boeing’s Air Force F-47 contract from March 2025, the company now controls both major next-generation fighter programs.
- Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman lost the competition for the Navy’s F/A-XX program.
- Boeing shares trade around $192.72, within a 52-week trading band of $176.77 to $254.35.
- The defense division has accumulated $20.5 billion in losses from five fixed-price contracts, making the pricing structure of these new deals critical to profitability.
Boeing (BA) stock hovered near $192.72 during Monday trading, experiencing modest declines as investors processed news of the aerospace manufacturer’s second consecutive major military aircraft victory in less than 24 months.
The US Navy selected Boeing for its F/A-XX next-generation fighter program last week. The initial development phase alone carries a price tag exceeding $20 billion.
This victory arrives on the heels of Boeing’s March 2025 selection for the Air Force’s F-47 fighter program. The dual wins position Boeing as the exclusive supplier for both military branches’ sixth-generation combat aircraft initiatives.
The Navy’s decision marks a defeat for competitors Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. Northrop has requested a formal debriefing from Navy officials regarding the selection process, a procedural requirement before filing any potential protest.
Boeing’s Competitive Advantages
Industry sources attribute Boeing’s success to sustained capital investment and extensive expertise in carrier-capable aircraft design spanning multiple decades. Boeing strategically deployed advanced digital engineering platforms, enabling real-time collaboration between its design teams and Pentagon stakeholders throughout the development cycle.
“Boeing’s commitment was compelling,” noted a former Pentagon official, describing how thoroughly the company embraced Department of Defense requirements for modular, upgradable fighter platforms.
Steve Parker, Boeing’s defense operations chief reporting to CEO Kelly Ortberg, emphasized the company’s deliberate strategy. “Concurrent development of two advanced fighters was our objective from day one, and we made the necessary investments,” Parker stated.
The F-47 program targets its maiden flight in 2028 with operational capability scheduled for 2029. Air Force procurement plans call for a minimum of 185 aircraft to succeed the F-22 Raptor fleet.
The F/A-XX program operates on a longer timeline, with operational deployment anticipated during the 2030s. This aircraft will ultimately replace the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet inventory and features integrated electronic warfare capabilities.
Profitability Risks Remain
Contract awards don’t automatically translate to financial gains for Boeing. Profitability depends entirely on pricing structures that both Boeing and Pentagon officials have kept confidential.
The defense division has absorbed $20.5 billion in losses across five fixed-price development programs, notably the KC-46 aerial refueling tanker and the Starliner crew capsule. “Fixed-price terms would raise red flags,” cautioned Richard Aboulafia, analyst at AeroDynamic Advisory.
Ortberg has publicly committed to avoiding fixed-price development contracts moving forward. The leadership team aims to prevent repeating the financial setbacks that plagued previous programs.
However, the long-term revenue opportunity diverges significantly from past efforts. The Air Force and Navy collectively plan to acquire more than 370 sixth-generation fighters over the programs’ lifespans.
That production scale, combined with Boeing’s position as sole supplier for both platforms, eliminates competitive pricing pressure from rivals for this entire aircraft generation. Lockheed Martin, which manufactured the F-22 and F-35 programs, lost its dominant position in next-generation fighter development.
Northrop Grumman secured the B-21 Raider stealth bomber program, claiming its own sixth-generation victory. However, in the fighter aircraft category specifically, Boeing now operates without direct competition.
Boeing’s defense, space and security segment recently achieved profitability following four consecutive years of red ink, based on S&P Global Market Intelligence financial data. Analyst consensus projects 2027 as Boeing’s return to comprehensive company profitability.
Boeing shares maintain a 52-week price range between $176.77 and $254.35, with current market capitalization approaching $152 billion. Both Pentagon officials and Lockheed Martin representatives declined to discuss contract pricing terms.
