Google’s Billion-Dollar Nuclear Agreement With Constellation Energy (CEG) Sends Stock Soaring 4%
TLDR
- Google parent Alphabet is on the verge of securing a nuclear energy contract with Constellation Energy valued at over $1 billion.
- Bloomberg News suggests the partnership could be made public within days.
- Shares of Constellation Energy (CEG) surged 4% during premarket hours on Monday following the news.
- The move follows similar nuclear energy commitments from Amazon and Microsoft as artificial intelligence workloads drive unprecedented power demand.
- Alphabet has already established nuclear partnerships with NextEra Energy and Southern Company.
Shares of Constellation Energy (CEG) jumped 4% in Monday’s premarket session after Bloomberg News disclosed that Alphabet (GOOGL), Google’s parent company, is finalizing a substantial nuclear energy partnership with the utility provider. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate the deal is valued at $1 billion or higher, with a potential announcement expected within the week.
Both companies have remained silent on the matter. Google has not issued any statement in response to media inquiries made outside regular business hours, while Constellation representatives declined to provide commentary.
Specific terms of the proposed agreement remain undisclosed. Key details such as the megawatt capacity involved and which facilities will supply the electricity have not been revealed.
Why Tech Companies Want Nuclear Power
The explosion of artificial intelligence computing has created an unprecedented appetite for electricity. Data centers supporting AI workloads consume massive quantities of power, and nuclear energy offers a carbon-free baseload solution that aligns with corporate sustainability commitments.
Nuclear facilities provide consistent, uninterrupted power generation twenty-four hours a day, unlike renewable sources such as solar and wind that depend on environmental conditions. For energy-intensive data center operations, this reliability is essential.
Google is far from alone in pursuing nuclear solutions. Major technology competitors have already secured comparable arrangements as the industry confronts growing energy challenges.
Amazon (AMZN) finalized an agreement with Constellation for 690 megawatts of capacity. A portion of this supply will originate from expansion projects at Constellation’s Calvert Cliffs facility located in Maryland.
Microsoft (MSFT) struck a deal in 2024 to purchase electricity from Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear station. Constellation intends to bring that facility back online in the coming year.
Google’s Growing List of Nuclear Partnerships
The potential Constellation arrangement would mark another addition to Google’s expanding nuclear energy strategy. In the previous year, the technology giant collaborated with NextEra Energy (NEE) on a project aimed at restarting Iowa’s Duane Arnold nuclear facility.
Just last month, Google formalized another partnership with Southern Company (SO) focused on enhancement projects at two nuclear power stations. Adding Constellation to this roster would further diversify Google’s clean energy sourcing.
Should the agreement materialize, it would secure additional dedicated electricity capacity for Google’s artificial intelligence infrastructure. This has emerged as a strategic imperative as the company accelerates its data center expansion plans.
Financial analysts maintain an optimistic outlook on Alphabet stock independent of this specific transaction. TipRanks data shows GOOGL holds a Strong Buy consensus rating, derived from 24 Buy recommendations and four Hold ratings issued over the last three months.
The mean price target among analysts stands at $427.88, representing potential gains of approximately 24% from present trading levels. This positive sentiment reflects broader confidence in Alphabet’s core business performance beyond energy procurement decisions.
Constellation has now established power supply relationships with three technology industry leaders: Amazon, Microsoft, and potentially Google. While each contract contains unique provisions, the underlying trend is unmistakable. Tech companies require vastly more electricity, and nuclear generation is becoming a critical component of the solution.
As of now, neither Google nor Constellation has issued official confirmation of the partnership. Bloomberg’s reporting, based on anonymous sources with knowledge of the discussions, remains the sole information available. A formal public announcement may arrive in the coming days.
